The University Health Insurance Plan was created in 1994, when the Ontario Government chose to exclude International Students from OHIP, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. International Students are required to purchase this insurance from a private company, rather than receiving public health care like all other Ontario residents.

This website is provided by the UHIP Action Committee, a coalition of Unions and Student Groups, with the shared goal of ending the unequal treatment of international students regarding health care in Ontario. The committee is not connected to the UHIP steering committee, nor to the provider of UHIP.
